Maintaining Your Gun Permit

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office Gun Permit Unit processes all changes of name or address for all permits issued by the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office through the expiration date of the permit.

The permit holder is required to notify the issuing Sheriff's Office of any change of address, loss or destruction of a permit. This must be done within 30 days of the event. Failure to provide notification as required is a petty misdemeanor.

Change of Personal Information (Address or Name)

The "Personal Data Change Form" is the first page of the Permit to Carry Application with the appropriate boxes checked in the upper right hand corner.

To update information in person:

The "Personal Data Change Form" can be completed in person at the Gun Permit Unit Office (425 Grove Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota). Applicant must present their current permit and current, valid identification reflecting the new information. The fee for the update permit is $10.00 (payable in cash or check). Applicant will be provided with a temporary permit/receipt.

To update information by mail:

The application for information change may also be completed by mail. Applicant must complete, sign and mail in the "Personal Data Change Form" along with their current permit and a copy of their current, valid identification reflecting the new information. Mail these items along with a check made payable to RCSO in the amount of $10.00 to:

Replacement of Lost / Stolen Permit Card

In the case of a lost, stolen or destroyed Permit To Carry Card a duplicate permit may be obtained for a fee of $10.00 (payable by cash or check). The application for a duplicate permit must be presented in person at the Gun Permit Unit (425 Grove Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota).  Applicant must present their current, valid identification.  A notarized statement is required on any lost or stolen permits in order to receive a replacement card.

Moved to Another County

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office maintains information on all permits it issues through the expiration date of the permit.  When a permit holder moves to a new permanent address in a different county a change of address must be processed as noted above.  Upon expiration the permit renewal must be presented to the county sheriff of the county where the permit holder currently lives, not the issuing county.

More Information

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) maintains a web site with information on the permit process, frequently asked questions, reports, and more.
