An "active shooter" is an event in which one or more armed persons are actively engaging in using deadly force against other persons. In most cases, active shooters use firearms to kill or attempt to kill people in a populated area. A number of tragic active shooter and hostile intruder incidents in public spaces, work places, or schools have heightened community concerns across the country.
Active shooter situations are dynamic and evolve rapidly, with immediate deployment of law enforcement officers to stop the violence and mitigate harm to innocent victims. Awareness about what steps to take if ever confronted with a similar situation is vital for survival. These incidents have demonstrated that preparedness, alertness, quick action, immediate notification, and rapid response are imperative.
The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office has worked to be prepared with the best available response training should this type of event happen. A prepared community will quickly notify law enforcement to start the response.
