The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to providing public safety services under the principles of trust and confidence between department members and the community. Any person who believes an employee’s actions are improper can make a complaint.
There is a supervisor available within the Sheriff’s Office to speak with you about your concern or complaint. Discussing the incident with the employee’s supervisor first is encouraged. This will allow the supervisor to discuss the circumstances surrounding the incident, clarify authority or actions, explain the responsibilities of a member of the Sheriff’s Office, and answer any questions. Often many complaints are resolved in this manner.
Options for Filing a Complaint
- Call the employee’s supervisor or Unit Commander. If you are not sure whom to contact, please call the Sheriff’s Office administrative line at 651-266-9333.
- Call the Watch Commander. The Watch Commander can be reached at 651-266-9547 after regular business hours between the hours of 3:00 pm and 2:00 am, seven days a week (including weekends and holidays).
- Call the Sheriff’s Office administrative line (651-266-9333). A staff member will help direct your call to the correct supervisor/unit. This line is answered during business hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, excluding government holidays.

- Visit or Call the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit. Complaints may be made in person at the Internal Affairs Unit, located at the Law Enforcement Center (425 Grove Street, Saint Paul). The Law Enforcement Center is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (excluding holidays). The Internal Affairs Unit can be reached at 651-266-9290.
- Complete an Internal Affairs Complaint Form (pdf). The complaint form has detailed instructions. Please be sure to read, complete, and sign the form before mailing or faxing it to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Internal Affairs (IA) Unit provides a full, fair, and complete investigation to address concerns about the actions of Sheriff’s Office employees by investigating complaints and allegations of misconduct or improper job performance or a believed violation of policy, procedure, and/or federal or state law has occurred.
