Apply to be a Master Gardener

THANK YOU for your interest!

The application period for the Master Gardener Intern class of 2016 has ended, however, please feel free to contact the program to put your name on the interested applicant list for 2017. Application materials will be available again to submit in late summer, early fall of 2016.

Review the Position Description to see if this is the right opportunity for you!

In general, applications with a supplemental questionnaire are due by October 1, 4:00 pm.

We accept applications, and, based on those, invite some for interviews. We notify all applicants via e-mail. After interviews, final accepted interns will be e-mailed the Master Gardener class registration link and are required to register by the December 1 deadline, attend an  orientation, usually the second week in December, and in the subsequent year complete 50 volunteer hours in Ramsey County projects and attend 4 Ramsey County Tuesday evening meetings. (After your intern year, Ramsey County Master Gardener annual requirements are to complete 25 volunteer hours and 12 education hours minimum.)

The 2016 Master Gardener Extension Class will be conducted at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska on Friday and Saturdays beginning January 8 and ending February 6. You may take the class online from the first week of January through early May. Interns may choose to take the course online, in-person or a combination of both. One module per week will be presented, but interns can work at an accelerated pace and finish early.

Class fee is normally $575, but accepted Master Gardener interns pay only the materials fee of $275 and may choose to take the class either online or in-person. There is also a 30.00 fee required for the background check.  (The online class meets weekly, but students may choose to move faster, as modules are posted well in advance.) Some financial assistance may be available, email :

Want to take the class for personal enrichment (and not volunteer)? Visit the above class page in November and select the 'ProHort Students' button on left. Full fees apply.
